3AM wake-up call and packed into the car, ready for a few hours on the road.

For those of you not familiar with the Great Ocean Rd - its mile after mile of twisting, curving, winding one lane road that hugs the coast line of Victoria. Awesome if you love driving which I do. It can be a nightmare during the day when the road is usually taken with tourists, some of which aren't sure which side of the road they should even be driving on, let alone actually doing the right speed limit on hair-pin turns with a steep plunge into the ocean on one side and a cliff wall on the other.

Prepare the shots and angles and get the work out-of-the-way, then sit back and just enjoy the serenity and peace for a while, before the roads start getting busy.

Time to head back home - this time taking the quicker less-scenic route. Three and a half hours later back home safely with some new memories and a few choice shots of some of the most picturesque places on Earth.

I could have made up more excuses if I had chosen to, but I chose otherwise. These are the moments in life that will make you a true professional creative or just another hobbyist.

How to Take Amazing Travel Photography

Usually, on starting a photography business, people work on a freelance basis or part time until they are able to build up enough reputation to open a studio of their own. Usually people wait till they have done sufficiently well before opening up their own studio. You can always opt to set up a photography studio at your home, if you have the space, which will save you money, or you can rent a space for setting up the studio. It really depends on the budget you have assigned and also on your own personal preferences. If you live somewhere in the boonies, you will probably want to rent a space nearer to the town so that people don't have to drive too far to see your work and meet you. Your studio should reflect your own personal style and you should strive to make it look like that.

Regardless of the type of photography you do, there are three basic areas you need to include and look into while setting up your studio.

Your photography studio requires an office space, a work area and an equipment storage area. In the storage area, all your photography equipment will be kept. For this you need to first install some shelving units that can hold heavy and fragile items. I started out shooting photography and using several types of photography lenses in the early 1980's. My uncle introduced me to Pentax SLR equipment as he had a wholesale representative contact in Denver. I was able to purchase thousands of dollars worth of equipment for pennies on the dollar. And, so began the journey with my Pentax LX professional line of equipment. My photography lens arsenal was made up of many types such as wide angle, zoom, telephoto, macro, and standard camera lenses . I had a motor drive, high end camera flash, tripods, camera lens filters, lens hoods and more to get me started. As an athlete my first love was shooting sports which involved fast film, fast lenses, and a zoom lens. I soon fell into shooting landscapes, wildlife, and weddings. And, let me say, all for free. I loved taking pictures and giving them away to people who did not understand how to capture those prize memorable moments behind the lens.

So, what makes up the chemistry of photography lenses? How do they work and when should I use one over the other? Today it is so easy to get that all automatic digital SLR camera and lens and hope that the subject turns out as you thought it should. I think these automatic cameras are great. However, if you understand how to utilize other photography lenses in a manual mode you can still produce beautiful photographs. I actually have a Nikon D70 digital SLR camera today in addition to my Pentax LX and Nikon Coolpix pocket digital.

Have fun and remember that you can take oodles of pictures today and test your photographs much easier with digital SLR photography . If you don't like your results, delete them. Then, go out and take more pictures!

Photography Studio - Things You Need To Keep In Mind!

It's been a hectic time of artistic painting creativity over the past few months. So much so that I had a hard time remembering the last time I was behind the lens! I could name a million reasons as to why I haven't picked up the camera but let's face it, they would all be excuses not reasons!

So it was with much enthusiasm and a lot of coffee that I went back behind the lens. Some images required for a small campaign for my own hometown and backyard, the Otways, Great Ocean Rd and Apollo Bay Victoria, Australia.

3AM wake-up call and packed into the car, ready for a few hours on the road.

For those of you not familiar with the Great Ocean Rd - its mile after mile of twisting, curving, winding one lane road that hugs the coast line of Victoria. Awesome if you love driving which I do. It can be a nightmare during the day when the road is usually taken with tourists, some of which aren't sure which side of the road they should even be driving on, let alone actually doing the right speed limit on hair-pin turns with a steep plunge into the ocean on one side and a cliff wall on the other.

Prepare the shots and angles and get the work out-of-the-way, then sit back and just enjoy the serenity and peace for a while, before the roads start getting busy.

Time to head back home - this time taking the quicker less-scenic route. Three and a half hours later back home safely with some new memories and a few choice shots of some of the most picturesque places on Earth.

I could have made up more excuses if I had chosen to, but I chose otherwise. These are the moments in life that will make you a true professional creative or just another hobbyist.

The outcome of your life is based on the choices that you've made in the past. Tomorrow's outcome will be based on the choices that you make today. What will you choose?

Portrait photographers focus more on the face and emphasis on it even though the body and the background may also be included in the photo. Whereas the photography is not that hard to achieve, it may take a few skills to get the most stunning shots. Below are some helpful tips you should consider to get the best from portrait photography for your desired use and purpose.

Tip 1 - Let the camera be at an angle. Shooting portraits goes beyond the usual vertical and horizontal framing. Diagonal angles have a way of injecting some fun into the images and add some energy to them as well. You, however must be careful when angling so you do not end up looking as though you made a mistake holding the camera.

Tip 5 - Play around with unfocused shots. Sharply focused images seem to be the standard for photographers. At times, however, especially in portrait photography, shots that are unfocused tend to work best. This is because they have a tendency of showing real emotion, interest and mood. You can achieve such shots by using a large aperture to create narrow depth of field and then focusing on something that is in front or behind the subject instead of focusing directly on the subject. You can also use wide aperture and focus on something else besides the subject so the full image is out of focus. Unfocused shots tend to be mysterious and dreamy and work for some purposes.

How to Take Amazing Travel Photography

Travel photography is a career for some. Most people though just want to bring back nice photos to show their friends and family. No image will replace the moment of being there, that's why people still travel instead of browsing Google Images! Professional or amateur, the first thing you need is a camera. Yes, a camera, and a real one, not a phone or something you attach on your helmet.

Choosing the best camera to buy requires a good amount of research. However, most modern cameras will do a good enough job, particularly if you do not want to get technical. Today, if you buy any mirrorless or DSLR, you will get a very good camera. Just skip the kit lens and buy a good general purpose one but not a super-zoom as those compromise in image quality and low-light performance. For just making nice photographers, you can get a smaller fixed-lens camera. There are plenty of premium models offering 1" sensors which is a huge leap in image quality from the typical ultra-compact and cellphone camera.

Still, better image quality only allows a photographer to show the images bigger. It does not improve a photograph itself. Even a low-end camera now offers much better image quality than what 35mm used to be like 20 years ago and many such images graced covers of National Geographic. So, make sure you have a camera and let's get started on how to make amazing photographs!

Working with the light means to move yourself and the orientation of your camera to that what is shown in the viewfinder does not have a too high contrast. It's pretty simple, just look at the darkest and brightest area of the scene. Move to exclude one or the other when they contrast too much.

Working with the light often goes against the composition created in the previous step. This is why it is often much better to wait for the light. The sun does not move fast so this takes time but it is highly predictable. Take the time to see where the sun is and if it is moving towards a better position or not. Remember, the sun always moves towards the West. If the light is improving, come back later. If not, come back tomorrow.

Pay attention to sunrise and sunset times. Around then, plus or minus an hour, depending on where you live, the contrast is lowest and there is still color in the sky. This is the best time to take beautiful images. Over 95% of published travel images are taken during these times!

There you have it. Much better images to showcase with only 3 steps: Get a camera, compose and work with the light.

1. Print your images

Are your photographs destined to remain hidden on a hard drive forever, unseen by the world? Remember the buzz you once had in the pre-digital days, when you saw your photographs the first time in print?
Why not peruse your recent holiday snaps, and select your best work to be immortalised with ink on paper. Frame them; hang them in your home; give them away as gifts.

2. Update your camera gear

There comes a time when your digital camera doesn't do your skills justice. While point-and-shoot cameras are convenient and cheaper, they are restricted by their simplicity and their smaller sensor size.

Unfortunately, the old adage 'you get what you pay for' is still the truth. Even an entry-level DSLR and kit lens will produce sharper and bigger images, and allow you to play with a wider aperture range, from at least f/4 to f/22.

If you're into landscape photography, a sturdy tripod is a must, as is a polarising filter to darken blue skies. A cable release will prevent camera shake during longer exposures. A decent kit bag will protect your expensive gear, and enable more efficient access to it.

3. Subscribe to a photography magazine

The racks of most bookshops are stacked with numerous photography magazines. My favourite is Digital SLR Photography*, which boasts a higher standard of writing than found in other titles from the UK. Of course, these days you can subscribe to the digital version of magazines, and download them to your mobile device of choice.

4. Start a personal project

A popular pastime is to shoot a photo every day for 365 days. The idea is to force yourself into the habit of getting your camera out regularly, not just for holidays, or special occasions. Shoot ordinary events or items.

10. Join the club

Photo albums have now been replaced with on-line galleries. Host sites include Google Photos or Yahoo's Flickr, but if you're serious, why not build your own personal website? This is no longer such a daunting task, as it was a few years ago. Cloud-based hosts include clikpic.com and wix.com where beautiful templates make DIY web design a breeze.

However, if you and computers don't mix, you can always find a like-minded community of real humans in a local camera club. These not-for-profits offer advice, training, competitions, trips, conventions and printed publications.

11. Take a photography course

Most folks will benefit from attending at least one photography course, especially when they're starting out. This needn't be a four-year university degree. Check out your local high school - many offer night classes for adults, and are great value for money.

Alternatively, many pro photographers run seasonal workshops on portraiture, wildlife or landscapes.

12. Go on tour

To really improve your photography, you need to grab your camera, and practise, practise, practise.

Perhaps the best way to fast-track your camera skills is on an intense weekend shooting on location, with an experienced guide. He or she will transport you to the best hot spots at the best time of day, to ensure you get great images.
